Ethiopia Abdulrherman Ababulgu

Abdulrherman Ababulgu is a small holder farmer in the Oromia region of Ethiopia.  This is grade 1, varietals 74110 and 74112 and grown at over 8,200!  Because of the altitude his coffee is grown, the cherries are super dense making for excellent flavors.  The processing method is washed with a 36 hour fermentation followed by drying on raised beds for 10-12 hours.

The government in Ethiopia has a heavy hand in the coffee industry.  Of the 100m+ people in Ethiopia, nearly 15m rely on coffee for income.  This accounts for ~60% of foreign income and is ~40% of total country exports.  In spite of the vastness of the industry, there is surprising amount of consolidation.  Things change often in Ethiopia concerning the coffee industry but for the most part coffee buying happens in 3 ways, from an exporter who buys off the ECX (Ethiopian Commodity Exchange), from a Coop Union which markets coffees collected from member coops or direct from a single producer or estate.  In order for a single producer to be able to sell directly, they must have over 2 hectares of land.

As as a result of the ECX formation in 2008, the only real way to buy a coffee from Ethiopia that is traceable and forge a relationship with the producer is to buy from a single producer.  The problem is that single producers are much more rare because there are not many farms large enough to produce enough “export” volume for buyers.

We are grateful to partner with Crop 2 Cup to be able to roast and offer this excellent small holder coffee from Ethiopia!
