Nicaragua El Diamante – The Reds

Don Francisco and Blanca Nieve’s farm, El Diamante, lies in Northern Nicaragua in the region Jinotega.  Their farm sits at approximately 1,400 MASL or about 4,500’ elevation.  Grown at high elevation, they produce beautiful washed varietals of Caturra, Bourbon, Pache and Catuai.  Their prized coffee, “The Reds”, has notes of red apple, cherry and honey.  This coffee has won numerous Golden Bean awards in the North American roasting competitions.  Whether you prefer a clean cup of filter coffee, straight up espresso or a milk based espresso drink, you will not be disappointed!

Like so many independent coffee farming families, it is tough to earn a respectable wage farming coffee.  Many years ago Don Francisco and Blanca Nieve were subject to selling their harvest to the local cooperative.  As a result of the cooperative being mismanaged Don Francisco and Blanca Nieve could not earn enough to support their family.  As fate would have it, their paths would cross with Gold Mountain Coffee Growers.  Since this partnership developed, GMCG has helped them to get their wonderful coffees to small batch roaster such as ourselves.  In addition to getting more market access at higher prices, GMCG has also provided financing so that Don Francisco and Blanca Nieve have been able to triple the size of their original farm El Diamante and purchase a second farm!
