Nicaragua Los Milagros – Mulled Red Wine

Isidro Salgado has been farming coffee for many, many years.  His farm, Los Milagros, lies in Northern Nicaragua in the region Jinotega way out of the way of easy access.  His farm sits at 1,500 MASL or about 5,000’ elevation.  Growing coffee at this altitude imparts complex notes and dense beans which are a prize to roast!  Isidro grows varietals Red & Yellow Caturra and Bourbon.  His coffee, “Mulled Red Wine”, gets its name because of the incredible notes it produces in cup such as cherries, jasmine and red wine.

Partnering with Gold Mountain Coffee Growers, Isidro has been able to really invest in his farming practices.  Because GMCG has a mission to protect the environment in and around Jinotega, they offered Isidro a “quality premium” to produce the highest quality coffee possible while at the same time protecting the environment.  Isidro decided to take the premium he is being paid and invest in protecting the watershed on his farm.  One example is that he built a water filtration system to clean the water after it is used to wash his coffees.  Instead of dumping this water and creating erosion and runoff it is now re-purposed for a greater good!
