Ethiopia Reshad Ababulgu White Honey
Mandarin · Jasmine · Apricot · Brown Sugar
This coffee comes from one farmer and one family plot. Single-producer lots are rare in Ethiopia, and this is one of the best we've tasted this year.
In the cup
It opens with bright mandarin orange and jasmine. As it cools, stone fruit comes forward: apricot, ripe peach, and a touch of nectarine. Green tea gives it a delicate finish, with a brown sugar and toffee sweetness underneath. The white honey process makes it sweeter and silkier than a typical washed Ethiopian while keeping the clarity and florals the region is known for.
The farmer
Reshad Ababulgu is a second-generation farmer in the Agaro area of Jimma, in western Ethiopia. His family has worked the same land for about 60 years, passed from his grandfather to his father to him. In the early 2010s he replanted with improved varieties and modern growing practices. He lives less than a kilometer from the farm with his wife and three children, and coffee is the family's only livelihood.
For years Reshad sold his cherry to local cooperatives, so his coffee was blended in with everyone else's. He now has his own export license, which means he can sell his coffee under his own name and earn the premium his quality deserves. This is his coffee, fully traceable to him.
The process
White honey is a careful method. The cherry skin is removed, a thin layer of the sticky fruit (mucilage) is left on the seed, and the beans dry slowly on raised beds. That thin layer adds sweetness and body without the heavy fermented character of a natural.
Fair pricing
We bought this coffee from our import partner Crop to Cup, who has worked with Reshad since 2023. Reshad was paid $6.00/lb FOB, which is $2.27/lb above the commodity "C" market price at the time of booking.
